Overview

The ArcelorMittal Steel Industry Business Scenario is a quality-based assignment system based on ONTORULE technology.

Ontologies and business rules are used to describe the business scenario. The system will support engineers and other stakeholders at ArcelorMittal by assigning products based on the quality of the product delivered to the customers.

The demonstrator is described in detail in D5.4 and its enhancements are part of D5.5. It is available online on: Steel industry use case demonstrator

ONTORULE Approach

We illustrate the ONTORULE approach for the ArcelorMittal Steel Industry Business Scenario in a sequence of typical tasks performed by the Personas involved with the scenario.

Abstract Process

  1. Marc (business analyst) interviews Gary (senior business expert) and Alice (defect expert at the Galvanizing Line in Avilés), acquiring the knowledge behind the assignment decision of a coil. The result is an ontology with the conceptual model of the steel use case, written using an Ontology authoring tool.
  2. Luis installs a rule authoring tool on Alice's PC.
  3. Alice imports the ontology with the rule authoring tool.
  4. Alice is now able to author rules that reference the model generated from the ontology and starts creating a first version of the coil assignment system.
  5. Alice obtains the final rule constraints from Marc and modifies the first version of the system.
  6. Luis executes the system with a rule execution tool and exports the rule system into a Java archive (JSR-94) and creates a web application that uses this rule engine.
  7. Luis integrates the rule system with the data extracted from the plant information systems.
  8. Luis publishes the web application and notifies Alice.
  9. Alice tests and validates the web application.
  10. Luis generates documentation of the domain ontology with the ontology/rule set documentation tool.
  11. Luis generates documentation of the rules with the ontology/rule set documentation tool.
  12. Luis notifies Joana of the availability of both the application and the documentation.
  13. Joana uses the web application to take assignment decisions on the coils processed at the plant.

Concrete Implementation

  1. Marc (business analyst) interviews Gary (senior business expert) and Alice (defect expert at the Galvanizing Line in Avilés), acquiring the knowledge behind the assignment decision of a coil. The result is a conceptual model of the steel use case, represented in the steel case scenario ontology steel.owl written in OWL using Protégé.
  2. Luis installs JRules and the OWL plugin on Alice's PC.
  3. Alice imports the steel.owl ontology into JRules using the OWL plugin.
  4. Alice is now able to author rules that reference the BOM model generated from the ontology and starts creating a first version of the coil assignment system.
  5. Alice obtains the final rule constraints from Marc and modifies the first version of the system.
  6. Luis exports the rule system into a Java archive and creates a web application that uses this rule engine.
  7. Luis integrates the rule system with the data extracted from the plant information systems.
  8. Luis publishes the web application and notifies Alice.
  9. Alice tests and validates the web application.
  10. Luis generates documentation of the domain ontology in OWL with Parrot.
  11. Luis exports the rules from BAL/IRL to RIF-PRD and generates documentation with Parrot.
  12. Luis notifies Joana of the availability of both the application and the documentation.
  13. Joana uses the web application to take assignment decisions on the coils processed at the plant.
